The asa-no-ha (hemp leaf) pattern has long been regarded as a noble motif in Japanese design, historically reserved for objects associated with the Imperial household. Its precise geometry and symbolic meaning—growth, strength, and protection—make it one of the most revered Kumiko patterns.
Traditionally, kiri asa-no-ha Kumiko screens are crafted in continuous rows and are often used in highly formal shoin-zukuri architecture, as well as in decorative alcoves (tokonoma). When spanning multiple shōji panels, the pattern creates a striking and harmonious visual rhythm. Even within modern interiors, it maintains a strong and refined presence.
The upper section of the pattern features fine cross pieces that allow for subtle creative variation. There is no fixed proportion—each element can vary in size and thickness—making every piece uniquely balanced. The assembly requires extreme precision, culminating in the final locking piece, which fits under exact tension—a moment that defines the craftsmanship of true Kumiko work.
The lantern frame is crafted from spruce wood, finished in black, while the Kumiko pattern is left in natural spruce, creating a refined contrast that enhances the structure’s depth and elegance. Hand-applied kozo paper softly diffuses the light, producing a warm and calming atmosphere.
This is a large statement lantern, well-suited for spacious interiors such as living rooms, bedrooms, reception areas, or refined commercial spaces.
